Parent Coaching

Parent Coaching

It is understandable to want some guidance. Parenting can often feel like looking for something without a map. It is for this reason so many parents come into my office with a specific request to “change” or “fix” their children in some respect. In these “quick fix” situations, it becomes apparent that it is the parent(s) that also need to do the work. When one feels lost, the initial response to that frustration can be to displace the struggle onto another. This isn’t to say that your child doesn’t have real struggles they are working through. But often, they become the focus, when it’s the family as a whole that needs paying attention to. As one part of that unit, I work with parents in a number of ways to help them find harmony in their relationship with their children.

Together We Can Explore:

  • Noticing your projections onto your child and owning them
  • Modeling healthy boundaries for your child
  • Connecting with your child in a way that is meaningful for both of you
  • How to create structure in a way that feels containing and loving for your child, as opposed to dictatorial and shaming
  • Ways to encourage your child’s independence
  • Exploring your goals for your child, and observing whether they are your goals in life, or theirs
  • Observing how much of your emotional life you ask your child to hold
  • How to cope with your own feelings when you see your child suffering
  • Ways of communicating other than yelling/physical contact/ Passive Aggressive Behavior
  • Explore any difficult feelings you may have regarding intimacy and how this impacts your capacity to connect with your child

The list goes on. The single most important aspect of this work is ownership. As a parent, it is okay to feel like you need some guidance, or that you could be doing something a little bit differently, and owning that is the first step. In my eyes, this doesn’t make you a bad parent, but a responsible, conscious one. I’d love the opportunity to serve as a bit of a map for you through that process.
